Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
